AMD claims new quad-core will trounce Xeon
Mario Rivas, general manager of AMD's microprocessor group, said Barcelona will provide a double-digit leap in integer performance over the quad-core Xeon, though he declined to be more specific. Henri Richard, chief of sales and marketing at AMD, said Barcelona will have a significant integer performance lead over Intel's quad-core chips.
Could they possibly see another surge of success like they did with the Opteron? Considering the lengthy delays in getting it out, I doubt it, but to at least hear from them is somewhat encouraging. There's no doubt they've been slipping, both against Intel and against Nvidia.

Am I the only one thats unimpressed by claims that a processor to be released in the (apparently distant) future, will out perform a processor thats been released for weeks now? |

Final samples are to be delivered to manufacturers in May, starting mass production in June. Barcelona chips will run at 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3GHz at at launch in Q2 with 95w TDP. Chips running at 2.4 and 2.5Hz will be released in Q3 with 120w TDP. I wonder most about pricing. I hope it can lower prices by over 50% just as Core 2 has. Not likely because Barcelona has a 11 layer process compared to Core 2's eight and it's bigger. AMD should have a higher defect rate and need to charge more. |

Both Intel and AMD have hit performance barriers with their micro-architectures. That's why they have to keep adding cores instead of actually improving single threaded performance.It's a pipe dream to think that Intel is going to achieve a "100%" performance improvement in the near future. 10% per quarter is more realistic unless they release a new core (which won't happen for at least a few years). |

It's a new design with a new socket and CSI. Intel said the new Bearlake chipsets and DDR3 are good for a over 10% boost in performance. With 45nm and higher FSB this should make for some good competition late this year. I think Intel will have a price advantage and AMD will a have a performance advantage. How much remains to be seen. These numbers a too vague. |

I have no doubt the new AMD quad core processors will be good but I dont think they have the resources to beat Intel especially to that degree, I hope this isnt a case of Apple marketing. |
