RIAA wins lawsuit against university for student info
Unfortunately for the little guy, it's hard to win them all. In fact, it's hard to win period against the RIAA, as 53 students at UW-Madison may soon find out. Recently, a federal judge found in favor of the RIAA as they requested the names and other information of 53 potential filesharers. While none of them have yet been served, we all know the RIAA is not above going after financially strapped students. Things such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses and MAC addresses are being released. The University, to its credit, stood up to the RIAA initially. Now, however, it'll be in the hands of each individual student to decide whether or not they settle or take it to court.

The RIAA should stop trying to frighten people by suing the little guy. It's not like the money they win off these cases is actually getting to artists they say they are trying to protect.

Exactly. Its not about recovering lost profits... its about intimidation. Its about bullying. And picking on some of the poorest and youngest folks in society (when they are hardly the only culprits) is cowardly and pathetic.
