Sony releases PlayStation 3 firmware version 2.0

By on
Sony’s PlayStation 3 firmware yesterday jumped a full version number to 2.0. Unfortunately, the console’s latest update will probably fall short of almost everyone’s expectations. The biggest addition in firmware version 2.0 will be further integration of the PSP into the PS3 with Remote Start, which will allow users to turn their systems on and off remotely.

Other new features include the addition of custom themes to personalize the XMB interface, the ability to build music and photo playlists, the creation of a PlayStation Network category on XMB, and parental controls which are free until April 2008, after which you'll need to pay an as-yet undisclosed fee. However, just days away of its one year launch anniversary, the PlayStation 3 still has no support for in-game XMB integration, private chats, or game invites.

The new firmware is now available for download using the PS3’s network update feature or directly from SCEA’s Network Update page.
