AMD begins phase-out of X2 series processors
The infamous Athlon X2, which for a long while was king of dual core until Intel released Core architecture CPUs, is being phased-out. As AMD begins to focus on the Phenoms and the Athlon 6000 architecture, and starting soon they will no longer manufacture or take orders for the X2 series processors.
This includes their latest (and probably last) iteration of the X2, the X2 6400+ Black edition, though some revamps of older CPUs like the 4600+ are still in the works. I certainly hope that their concentration on Phenom will help them recover from the past two years, in which they have been beaten again and again by Intel.

Post a comment| nirkon on December 28, 2007 4:50 AM | thats a really dumb move.. that'll leave even less processors in the market, and the AMD's lower-level processors are keeping the company alive... for building a budget PC, you'll always find an AMD proc, and an ATI graphics card... its the best bang for the buck.. but when you want something more expensive, they don't cut it.

| PanicX on December 28, 2007 3:34 PM | I'd guess that the move is more an unavoidable necessity. If they're to compete with Intel, they're going to need to retrofit their fabs, which can't happen until they take them off the production line.
Unlike Intel who has billions of dollars in revenue, they're seeing losses and probably can't afford to build a whole new plant for the next gen processors.
