Sony Pictures to enable downloads in DivX format
DivX has inked a major deal with Sony that will let retailers offer the studio’s entire library for download and playback on DivX certified devices, which most recently included the PlayStation 3 into its ranks. Sony said the deal was part of its attempts to find legitimate ways of distributing its content online and that the movies should be available in DivX format on the same day as the DVD release of each title.
The move is definitely good news for the DivX camp, which is generally considered to be the highest quality way to encode video, but is also often regarded as a platform for distributing pirated content. Next up, getting online retailers to start offering video downloads in DivX format.
