PlayStation 3 Cell processor to shrink again

Sony has already managed to nearly break even on their console production cost versus retail prices, and now production costs on the PlayStation 3 are set to drop once again as IBM will soon move the console chip onto the company’s next-generation 45nm high-k process.

The new 45nm chip will use about 40 percent less power than its 65nm predecessor, meaning Sony can cut down on the amount of cooling required by the console, which in turn will make it cheaper to produce. Another major factor is the production yield. In a nutshell, a smaller die means a smaller, cheaper package and less rejected chips, making production more cost effective. The new Cell chip will likely contribute to a price cut at some point down the line, it's just a question of when.

Once the price cut happens, the ps3 will outsell the x-box 360. If the perceived shortage of Wii continues, the ps3 will close the gap significantly.

I think that they personally see that their console is way over priced compared to the other two major consoles, and they're obviously trying to find ways in which to lower the cost and still get out as much effectiveness in their console as before. On a side note, however, I think it would be a good idea for them to also focus on their PS2 Live Multi-Player. That's what will drive more people to use their product, I believe. It'll also help with competitiveness with Xbox Live.

I really am amazed at what my PS3 can do for the $$. I recently saw it could play games but before that it became my media hum to my HD TV. It can play all my DIVX movies from my computer and upconverts them to 1080p. How cool is that? Also the blue ray movies are just out of this world! And the games that I just started trying out...You can download the demos for free right to its internal hard drive are out of this world with dolby digital surround sound. Amazing little piece of machinery. Yes I was anti PS3 before too but since I decided to take the HD plunge this was the best bang for the buck. Glad I went this route.
