Sony to drop 40GB PlayStation 3 price to $350

If you've been meaning to get a PlayStation 3 for a while but have never been able to stomach the price, you’ll be happy to know that Sony is apparently about to introduce another price drop for the console. Specifically, the company is said to be preparing to drop the (discontinued) 40GB model price down to $350, the cheapest it's ever been.

The reasons for the price drop could be numerous. They could be trying to set themselves up for other price drops on other models, they could be trying to unload what's left of the 40GB stock (seeing as they aren't producing it anymore) or they could just be trying to get more interest in the PS3 before the end of the year. Whatever the reason, if you've been waiting on price to get a PS3 now might be your chance to get one. Obviously this price drop won't last forever, as once the existing 40GB units are sold there will be no new ones put back onto shelves.

Anyone who doesn't have one of these needs to get one at that price! It is such amazing media center and very quiet. I think it became a essential part of my life. And I really never even play any games although they are awesome when I do. It streams all my dvd movies, HD movies, MP3's and all my digital pics to my HD TV. Awesome!

It's still more expensive next to an Xbox 360 Pro (60GB HD, available now) at $299. I would have liked to see it more competitive against the Microsoft counterpart. Blu-ray just isn't the selling point that Sony wanted it to become, and they must consider winning the console war. And when I consider the soon Netflix partnership with the 360, it makes an even stronger argument for sale at a lower cost.

YA I would say the 360 for a gamer system maybe but as a media center I think the PS3 wins. It is quiet and doesn't have the high failure rate of the 360. Plus add in blu-ray and I still think the PS3 is a better bargain. I guess it depends on what you want the systems for. I wanted to be able to play Bluray and stream movies and sound. If I played games mostly I would probable get a 360. I do wish the PS3 would get netflixs although unless it is blu-ray HD quality I wouldn't really use it much. Plus since I have my LCD TV hooked up to my computer already I can display the full screen Netflix movies anyways. It still would be nice to have netflixs in there because I know in the future they will stream HD and then it will be awesome.
