Anyone who has been into PC gaming for a while knows that the graphics card company's naming schemes can be quite confusing for the average user. Take Nvidia for example, the company released some GeForce 8 and 9-series graphics cards based on the same G92 GPU, and had already made things confusing with a variety of suffixes - GS, GT, GTS, GTX, Ultra...

But while Nvidia is certainly not the only company out there with a dreadful naming convention, rumor has it that they will be announcing a new naming scheme to avoid confusion. According to TG Daily, Nvidia is planning to drop the GeForce 9000-series naming scheme, and instead give all its GPUs a name in line with the GeForce GT200-series.

By the end of 2008, says the report, Nvidia will be offering today's 9000 series as G100, GT120, GT130, GT140 and GT150 models. It will also resort to using simpler letter prefixes to denote performance levels, "G" for baseline, "GS" and "GT" for mid-range and "GTX" for high-end.
