Massive Zune 30GB issues reported, auto-fixed by midnight
Today is a bad day to be a Zune user, it seems. There are numerous reports coming in from all over about a widespread failure of Zune 30GB models locking up during boot with no ability to turn them off or reset the devices. The problems have appeared in mass quantities on the Zune forums as well as being reported by users at other sites. The problem was recognized by Microsoft hours later with a vague “we are working on it” response.
An unofficial fix has been discovered and requires some minor tinkering. It'll likely void your warranty, but if you have a sense of adventure and a dead Zune, the fix is reported to work without issue.
Then just an hour ago or so, we learned that a software glitch came into effect with the leap year clock. Microsoft's response then:
Q: What is Zune doing to fix this issue?
The issue should resolve itself.
Indeed. By midnight your Zune should be back to normal, at least until the next leap year in 2012 or when Microsoft issues a patch fixing the bug.

Microsoft innovates a new bug, for a relatively new product (one Microsoft year is roughly equivalent to seven human years -- check out the time between OS releases, e.g.), and then only discovers it when it's too late. Procrastination (read: incompetence) seems to be one of their strengths, if not also a social skill. Bad enough that tax payers, consumers and businesses footed a bill totalling hundreds of millions of dollars for their Y2K debacle. (Oh. We forgot the century was turning. Our bad.) Now, owners of their failed "iPod killer" have to suffer yet another insult, beyond a significant degree of insult that obtains from the simple fact of owning a Zune. When does it end? It ends when Microsoft discovers a bug that dissolves their incompetent corporate mismanagement. Oh, wait. That bug was already discovered but, because Microsoft is Microsoft, noboday cared. Except for those zanie Microsoft Kool Aid drinkers who seem to believe that every POS Microsoft creates is touched by Midas himself. Thanks again Microsoft. You're nothing if not consistent.

Microsoft is responsible for perhaps the most significant hardware failure in recent history proving once again (after spending over 1.1 billion dollars to correct Xbox failures) that, they indeed are not hardware company and, without their monopolistic control on desktop software, are an extremely flawed software company. You're obviously very pissed. But your rage is misdirected. You need to consult the manufacturer as to why they cannot even get the simple things right. Bottom line: Apple has sold over 120 million iPods, while Microsoft only recently hit the three million mark. Add the millions of iPhones to that number, and it's clear to see that Microsoft is running a fairly pathetic second. I'm sure this latest failure will help them a great deal. Finally, get a referral for a good therapist who deals in anger management. You most certainly need it.

Also, as for cold hard facts, post your sources if YOU want to be heard. Otherwise its all opinion and we all know what opinions are like.
