Outlook and Thunderbird competitor Zimbra 1.0 released

Yahoo’s $350 million acquisition of Zimbra back in 2007 is finally coming to life as it transitions out of beta and into a 1.0 status. Zimbra Desktop 1.0 is now readily available to download free of charge for Windows XP and Vista as well as Intel-based Macs.

While there have been a few significant security holes in the past, the 1.0 release comes with a bag of bug-fixes among other tweaks. Being a new kid on the block, Zimbra is a self-proclaimed central inbox for all your email. As such, it naturally supports access to your Yahoo and Gmail messages, contacts and calendars, in addition to POP or IMAP email from AOL, Hotmail or work; although, some of the third party functions have retained their beta tag. Other noteworthy features include unlimited storage and support for twenty languages.
