Lenovo is updating its well-regarded Thinkpad T400s laptop and X200 tablet today with up to four-finger multi touch capabilities and a companion SimpleTap application. The updated devices are being introduced roughly a month ahead of Windows 7's debut, which will come with built-in support for touch and multi-touch features.

The T400s is a direct conversion of the existing model with the same 14-inch screen size as well as a relatively thin profile. The four-finger touch input capability on this system will cost you an additional $250, bringing its base price up to $1,999, which includes a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive and a DVD burner as well as the usual connectivity options.

The X200 with multi touch also gets a $250 price bump to $1,654. Although its 12-inch panel only supports two-finger input, the tablet gets an upgrade to a 1.4GHz Core 2 Duo and has a new 'super bright' screen option with an anti-reflective layer that makes it viewable outdoors. Touch based commands on both systems use gestures like pinching, zoom, tapping, and flicking -- though Windows 7 drivers haven't yet been finalized and the bundled SimpleTap software is still in beta.
