Ok, so ive had this computer for a while and it hasnt had this error before, when i defragment, it finishes but then says "Some files on this volume could not be defragmented", i dont see what causes it because it has never come up before.

So any ideas? Would very much appreciate the help!

Thanks

Hi

usual cause is system files or programs that are in use at the time such as AVG Spyware/Malware programs etc

Defag is best run in safe mode as the computer is started with a basic setup and no extraneous programs.

Windows Page File and the Windows Registry files, can not be moved by Defrag

For defragging the Registry and Page File, use PageDefrag:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897426.aspx

It's also possible that some are large files that can't be defragmented
due to not enough contiguous free space available

Why won't some files defrag?

With XP it always comes up.It can't defrag files in use like
"Defrag.exe" Try Safe Mode.
You will still not Defrag - Defrag.exe.:haha:

You mean dfrg.msc ofcourse !
Unless you're talking about dfrgfat.exe or dfrgntfs.exe or really dfrgui.dll (Vista could have done with that one :) )

%SystemRoot%\system32\dfrg.msc

But you get the idea. It's being used.
But Windows/Sysytem32 has a file named defrag.exe.
Just assumed exe as my Start Menu just says "Disk Defragmenter".
Big deal if i assume exe.
:haha:
You havn't added much to the topic problem.
