Database advice

I'm really hoping someeone can help me with this.

Basically I know nothing about databases but I need to find a solution for the following problem and I just haven't even a clue where to start

What I need to do is have a list of names that is continually added to and be able to compare it to a list of names that is provided on a daily basis in text file format and see if there are any matches from my database.

This seems so simple to do in theory but I just can't find anything that would point me in the right direction of where to begin in reality.

Anyone have any suggestions - please!!!!
