I'm not a fan of compaq computers. Compaq used to have a lot of problems with their computers, but things may be different now that they are a part of HP. I haven't used a compaq since before they got together with HP. But the Compaqs that I used before then were junk. I have heard they are getting a lot better. Anyways, just thought I'd tell you my experiences with Compaq.

You can buy a lenovo for about $700 give or take. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3952531&Sku=T71-15024

Lenovo laptops are one of the best.

You could buy a Dell Inspiron or you could try to find a nice used apple for around $700.

Hope this helps

Since the Hp/Compaq merger, Compaq have really come around the bend as far as quality. I have never owned one, but have done some upgrades to a friend and was impressed by build quality compared to years past.

That said, the lenovo is about 200 USD more for a better perforing CPU, is it really worth the money?

Here are a few I found that might be worth a second look,

I like the Lenovo R or T series.

your biggest concern should be ram quantity, then processor speed, then HD speed.

If the difference in cpu speed is only a few mhz, then I wouldn't spend the $200. If it is more than .5 ghz then I would consider it.
