Gateway announced it will be shutting down (http://www.informationweek.com/story/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=18700462) retail stores around the US (188 total) and as a consequence will be laying off about 2500 staff that corresponds to some 38 percent of its current workforce.

This change comes only a month after Gateway acquired eMachines and a new CEO took charge, the move is supposed to cut costs within the company... in the other hand, Apple who also maintains a retail store chain is expanding its retail presence and has proved sucessful in such venture.
