Have ZoneLabs discontinued Zone Alarm free Personal Firewall? The only free versions I can find on home page are both limited period, trial versions, namely:
ZoneAlarmŽ Extreme Security
ZoneAlarmŽ Internet Security Suite
However, the link dated Feb 25th '09, here (
http://www.techspot.com/downloadget.php?id=239&file=1&evp=92af746a3fc8ddb0c51ff7f1193583d9) provided by Techspot to Zone Alarm free Personal Firewall version still works, but I can't find it on Zone Alarm home page.
Am I missing something?

uninstall it and DL Sygate free. Does not function with Vista, great with XP. Just google sygate and go from there. Can't run both so uninstall the other first.

Here a site for the free v8.0.289.0 ZoneAlarm: http://www.filehippo.com/download_zonealarm_free/
Here's a link for the free version v7.1:
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/network_software/firewalls/zonealarm.cfm
Support:
1. What is different in ZoneAlarm 7.1?
ZoneAlarm 7.1 works exclusively on the Windows Vista operating system.
Due to the different needs and functionality of the Vista operating system, some features and functionality on 2000/XP may differ on Vista.
2. Can I install my older ZoneAlarm 7.0 on my Vista machine?
No, ZoneAlarm 7.0 is not compatible with Vista. Only install ZoneAlarm 7.1 or above on Vista.
An FYI for you: Re ZoneAlarm: v6, v7, v8 each represent an "engine" upgrade. The number after the dot is a "version" upgrade. For instance, you might have v8 and the most current "version" of v8 is v8.0.289.0.
Firewalls don't update like AV programs. The listen at ports and there is little change in that. But upgrading the "engine" is a significant change. I know this because I had the paid version of ZoneAlarm v5. Then they upgraded their engine to v6- otherwise I didn't update.

Hi Bobbye,
Thanks for that info re link to free download, and for distinguishing between the "engine" upgrade and "version" update. :D
I've noticed that in the 8 engine version, the same program works for both Vista and XP. When you download, unlike previous versions where it asks you to choose your OS between Vista and XP, there is no such option anymore.
Cheers Poppa Bear
ps the second link you gave, http://www.zonealarm.com/security/en-us/zonealarm-pc-security-free-firewall.htm, direct to Zone Labs for version 7 now gives you version 8.

Thanks Poppa Bear- have updated the link. It's hard to keep track of all the versions of programs!
