Dell Inspiron 6000 will only turn on with play/pause button

I recently had my Dell Inspiron 6000 reformatted by a friend of mine. Upon returning it to me, I found that the only way that I could turn my laptop was to push the play/pause button on my media strip located below mouse pad. This was an accidental finding and my friend has no idea why. A couple items of notice also...

1) Upon starting my computer out of hibernation there is a screen that displays for a few seconds that states Dell Media Direct. This has never shown up before.

2) My icon lights (the icons for caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock) do not work like they used to.

Everything else seems to be working just fine. I still have to install some other programs that I had on before, but nothing out of the ordinary I think. My thoughts are that he may have installed a Windows media type O/S or that maybe perhaps there is a specific driver for the power button/icon strip to function. Any thoughts?
