My cd/dvd drive wont work

I have a ASUS laptop, running windows XP.
A couple of days ago i try to play a cd and nothing happens. Same with a dvd.
In my computer there is no icon for cd drive.
In media player there is no option to play what cd is currently in the drive, which there used to be.
In device manager there is no cd drive listed, so i cant try to uninstall/reinstall drivers.
I tried a system restore, nothing changed.
I tried deleting upper filters, nothing changed.
Any ideas?

That is the sad case of the ASUS laptop drives. They do not match the Toshiba or Samsung drives.
When a user has troubles such as those you describe, we recommend they buy a new replacement rather than attempt a repair.
