The Nintendo DS (http://www.nintendo.com/e3_2004/ds/index.jsp) will use its built in headset port to provide voice-over-IP chat capabilities (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2004/08/31/news_6106106.html) via wireless 802.11b networking, it was revealed yesterday in a TNI Securities Electronic Entertainment Industry Update. The headset will allow gamers to use the DS as a phone handset enabling free phone calls over wireless network hotspots. So, a 2004 release of the DS still looks likely. Its hoped that inclusion of this technology will help drive adoption among a young target audience.
