Enterprise IT departments seem unconcerned about the loss of WinFS from Longhorn (http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1759,1641492,00.asp), the next generation file system that was supposed to debut with the new OS. Microsoft has dropped the technology (http://www.techspot.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=15125) from Longhorn to try to make good on its 2006 release date for the new OS. Quite a disappointment to techies like us, sure. But the business world seems unphased.
"I'm not hearing demand from enterprises for WinFS or a unified file system. It's a theoretical benefit that's been hard for Microsoft to explain. This is a pragmatic [step], and overall it will let enterprises and developers do better planning." - David Smith, vice president at market research firm Gartner Inc.
