IBM has unveiled its OpenPower line of servers (http://news.com.com/IBM+unveils+Linux+Power+servers/2100-1010_3-5363948.html?tag=nefd.top), based on the Power5 processor and running Linux, as part of the company's commitment to promoting the OS on their enterprise systems.
Four way rack and tower set-ups with up to 64 GB of RAM will come with either 1.5GHz or 1.65GHz Power5 microprocessors. They will use SuSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 and Red Hat's Enterprise Linux AS 3 Update 3 as their OS, and are intended to compete with Sun's lower-end Unix servers based on the UltraSparc processor. The servers will begin shipping on September 24th, and will be priced at $5,000 and up.
