Keyboard problems with my laptop

Matrim

I bought a laptop recently and one day I fell asleep while watching a movie on it and I think my daughter might have spilled something on it because when I woke up certain keys type more than one character when you touch them. ex. i8 w\ j7

Is this a fixable problem? Can I somehow take the keys off and clean under them? I tried reformatting and reinstalling windows but to no avail.

help me please

and thank you

Yes, you can open the thing up and clean it. You might want to let professionals do it though - laptops are rather difficult to take apart and put together.

You have turned Num Lock on and you get the numbers that are printed on these very keys. Turn off Num Lock.

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

You have turned Num Lock on and you get the numbers that are printed on these very keys. Turn off Num Lock.

Have you made sure that numlock is not activated, as Nodsu suggested?

If it`s not a numlock problem, It`s probably a faulty keyboard.

You did say that there might have been something spilled on it.

Nodsu did suggest you take it in and let the pros have a look at it.

Regards Howard :)

I had the exact problem with my keyboard today. If you look at the bottom row of keys on the left hand side, there is a fn key, next to the Ctrl key -press and hold the fn key and then hit f9 key. This will fix your problem

after hours and hours with gateway techs i was told to buy a new keyboard. in my gut i knew that it was not mechanical and tried all remedies to no avail. i have used an external keyboard for months now but never totally gave up. imagine, just a press of 2 buttons fixed my keyboard. thanks tialoves and now barryloves tia and techspot.:grinthumb

Gateway is the worst. I once had a techie try to copy a 4 meg file to a floppy. When that didn't work, he zipped it to a 3 meg file and tried to copy that to a floppy disk. lol Bunch of idiots.

I currently have 4 problems with my Gateway and they want a min of $250 just to send it in.

Hi
It has been a while for me but Iam back.
This Keyboard problem may be solved if you are able to read and fallow instructions, Log on to gateway and look for the model of your laptop and search for the manual, once there look for the replacement parts section, it
shows you step by step on how to remove the entire laptop in pieces, if you have never attempted this try labeling the parts and screws in the order you
have remove them, when you get to the keyboard use cotton swabs to clean
between hard to reach places.
Good Luck

Sheep following random advice without even bothering to figure out what it means..

You are supposed to press a NumLock key. On laptops, this happens with some Fn-combination. Yes, some laptops may have the number lock under F9, some other laptops can have it somewhere else. In short, look for a Num Lock, Num Lk, NL or suchlike key and press it while holding Fn.

Take the laptop in for repair. A keyboard replacement is not difficult, but it is best done by a technician

big problem with my laptop.
whenever i hit certain keys, the cursor starts scrolling to the left. For example, whenever i try to type "mountain," this is what comes out: mntaniuo. Or when i go to type "youtube" i get ytbeuuo. the keys dont all do this, only the q w e r u i o p and the right shift keys cause this to happen. the scrolling stops once i hit an unaffected key. on top of this, the left arrow key doesnt work either. plz help ive cleaned my keyboard allready and ive had no change.

Try replacing the keyboard. Just how did you clean the keyboard? Did you remove it from the laptop, or disconnect the interface cable from the laptop to the motherboard?

The Reason for this accident is because, you are trying to adjust the the Brightness on your screen, you accidently hit Fn- F9 instead of Fn- F8.............. I recently had a problem with my laptop gateway 6750 and my keyboard was crazy I had half of my keyboard not working after many hours of searching and frustration:confused: I found the solution, and I found it here on techspot.com I was already thinking of buying a new laptop thanks techspot.com I thankx guys.:grinthumb

I had the same problem , I hope you've fix this problem, and its because you hit fn-then F9 on the keyboard, hit it back and your keyboard will be back to normal.

If you ever attached an alternate regular pc keyboard with the numlock on, your laptop might then think the numlock is on even when you detach it, causing the 5 to type instead of the i.
Happened to me - I could not get the numlock to turn off.
Just attach the alternate keyboard again, turn off the numlock on the alternate keyboard, and then detach it. Your laptop keyboard should then start working again normally.

Here is my issue:
If you press the "a" key and then the "n" key it will open a new window or a save as window. It does this in Office, Notepad, IE and windows journal. Also if you hold down the "a", "q" or the "z" they only type one not multiples.

Steps I have taken to correct the issue:

the OS has been restored
the keyboard has been replaced
no sticky keys
no toggle keys
no filter keys

I have a keyboard problem!

When I type and use the T key, it takes what's ever after the T and jumps somewhere above that line [can be anywhere really] and starts the sentence I am writing there in the middle of another sentence. It's driving me nuts.

Here is an example of what happens if I don't watch the screen; and I can't do that cause I look at my keys

I have to shut off my computer to get it to copy and paste and I don't want to do that right now, so remind me I have some stuff on scrato [oh my God work; I get to the T in want and it jumps back between the O and P in scrapblog] thepblog I want finjumpr [again 2 more time in the process of typing one line; jumped from to up here, and then as I was telling you that; it jumped back again even more] er and it iaftsh [damn it

has anyone else had random letter jumping?

So the problem I've been having has been making it almost impossible to type, and I write a lot and am a fast typist. (seems to be doing better now, but just in case...)

What happens is certain letters will cause right-click menus to randomly open, stopping me in the middle of whatever I'm typing. Sometimes, what I'm typing will just be deleted and I have to start over again. It seems to happen most with periods, "l," "m," shift, and "c," which appears to simply be jammed anyway.

*sigh*

I tried the hold Fn and press F9 option I saw here, and that seemed to help reduce the number of times this is happening, but even as I type now it's still a problem. Any thoughts would be helpful! Thanks.

Btw I have a Gateway.

On my Acer Extensa 2000 I also plugged in a usb keyboard and had this problem. I found pushing the Number Lk key (F11) did not fix it, I had to hold down the 'Fn' key (bottom left) and then hit the F11 and it fixed it ok.

I am also having a keyboard issue with my M-Series Gateway lappy. When I press the 'L' key, it logs me out, and when I press 'E' it opens 'Computer'. 'U' opens 'Ease of Access' and 'R' opens 'Run'. I think a few other keys open some other windows shortcuts, but without it right here with me, I don't remember them all. However, for three or four months, the problem could be solved by starting the on-screen keyboard, double clicking the windows key, then double clicking it again, and just copy/pasting the letter 'l' when needed. The rest of the keys would work as normal. .I tried a USB keyboard, with the same results, and I also bought a new keyboard, which also produced the same results. However, Windows 7 came out, and I tried to upgrade it, only to find that Gateway had installed something that disallows any OS besides Vista to be used on their computers. When I put Vista back on, however, the problem seemed to be solved. It had wiped my harddrive, but I had backed up what I needed so it wasn't a problem. Three days later, the problem returned with a vengence. My friend who is good with computers suggested that I should try cleaning under the keyboard, and since I'm kindof a clutz, I figured it was a good idea. I took out the alcohol and cotton balls, and did what I thought was a good job (apparently I didn't do much). I put the keyboard back and found that I had accidentally disconnected it, but itstead of trying to plug it back in, I tried the USB keyboard again and it worked. For one day. Now my control panel dissappeared, along with Ease of Access (no On-Screen keyboard fix) and the problem is back with a vengence. Any solutions besides buying a new lappy? This is my last chance haha.

Hi! I have an Asus F3Sseries and some months ago i had to send it to repair due to a problem in sound. When i had it back, the key used for ">" and "<" didn't worked. If i clicked on it, it would work as "~" and "^". I searched if it was a language not well set, but everything was ok. Now, i dunno what to do. It's a hardware problem and only in a repair shop they can solve this or is there anyway to me to solve it?

I'm having a similar problem, but its not quite like those that have been mentioned. My laptop is about 2 years old and has always been in good condition. I went away for about a year and boxed it up where it remained untouched until I returned.

Since then, I cant type the letters 't' or 'y' as they show up with the two letters beneath them, ('t' comes up as tg and 'y' as yh!) and vice versa. All the other keys work fine. a friend advised me to buy a can of compressed air and really spray these two keys to clean them, but does anyone know if that sounds like a likely solution or is it something more serious? I've pasted this sentence again so you can see how frustrating it is before I to back and delete all the extra letters!! please help!! thanks! BTW its an 'e-system' laptop and standard ps/2 keyboard.

-I'm yhavintg a similar problem, butg itgs notg quitge like tgyhose tgyhatg yhave been mentgioned. Myh laptgop is aboutg 2 yhears old and yhas alwayhs been in tgood conditgion. I wentg away for aboutg a year and boxed itg ip wyhere itg remained untgoucyhed untgil I retgurned.

In response to :

My keyboard on my gateway laptop has recently been turning on the the numlock on it's own upon bootup about every 2-3 days. The problem is that not only is it doing it on it's own (i have no reason to and have never pressed fn + scroll which is what turns on my num lock) but that pressing them again will not turn it off.

I'm sharing my problem because I have been using a temporary solution that may help out others of you who's keys are typing the wrong thing, and it doesn't require the use of the keyboard.

When I boot up if my keyboard isn't working properly I simply navigate to device manager and uninstall the keyboard. This will prompt for a reboot in order to finish. Do so. Upon reboot windows finds the keyboard through plug n play and installs it, this requires another restart. After the second restart, about %80 of the time, viola, keyboard restored to working order. I hope that helps some of you having the same kinds of issues.

Now my second reason for posting this is because I would like to know if anyone has any ideas why my keyboard is perfectly fine for a couple days, and then does this? It's obviously not the keys or it wouldn't be working fine after the uninstall/reinstall. My 2 guesses are windows having problems with the version of the driver (though I have dl'd and installed the driver straight from gateway trying this as a fix,) or that there's a problem going on with the board where the laptop connects internally, whether it's the connection, the board, the keyboard, I'm not sure, but something keeps causing it to do this and i really don't have a good place to start diagnosing. Any suggestions?
