I am currently new to Linux and would like to try one.

My question is - Which Linux is mostly suitable for new user like me?
- Is it free?
- What the advantage and disadvantage?
- What Linux pupose for is it only use for server? etc.

I dont know much about the subject, but the way i see it:

1)linux is a good FREE alternative
2)great if you do programming etc.
3)does not require high comp specs.
4) doesnt have an as friendly user interface (i.E Windows)

I suggest that Nodsu should reply to this as he knows alot about everything.

Does it have to be free? I'm sure a lot of people can get any operating systems for free if they want to. Are you not willing even to donate something for what the software developers have done?

Because it's open source, anyone can customize Linux to be used in pretty much everywhere, from microwave ovens (http://www.redflag-linux.com/chanpin_old/ecp.php?id=10000008) to high-end clustered servers.

The advantages and disadvantages depend on your needs.

my needs are for a low powered file server, what doe linux offer in the way of this, and how does it differ from other OS'es. And your right, anyone can get any OS for free, doesnt mean its legal.... :D
