Ram works not works. A bios update or not?

I have installed a ram upgrade 256mb criucial
ram was 256 now 512,
worked at first then didnt then worked again
and then went off.
It showed that in Sio Soft that both banks were 128 each to equal the total of 256 mb.
the system crashed, the internet crashed and went missing.
The new 256 ram is still in the slot,
the system is still running on its original 256 ram.
The mob is a MS 6511 run through
Packard Bell.
I tried to get a Bios update and put it on a Floppy (twice)
but it wont run when I restart the comp, just get error message to remove it.
I diid upgrade or doo the Bois 8 months ago when I got anew 5600 graphics card.
So can you say what I can do to get the ram running on both banks at the full 512 please

packard bell = oem. you're probably wasting your time trying to get both sticks to work. if they won't work together, try each one seperately. if the 256mb stick works alone, you might as well use that.

I thought though that you can have two different Ram units?

(The original one is fine)

Or cant I just sort the bios out to accept them both

or do they have to bo of the same make ?

I thought though that you can have two different Ram units?ideally, but if there are any problems anywhere, it won't work.Or cant I just sort the bios out to accept them bothyou must manually change the memory timings in your bios to try this option, but i don't know if your oem bios allows said settings to be changed. in your bios, try looking around under advanced chipset settings, or any word combination thereof. you'll see a series of settings, namely CAS and RAS latencies.

but how do I gain access to it.?

I have opened up the chipset on by F2 on starting but how will one know what the changes are or can be?



Also I have d/L the bios update onto a floppy twice but it wont open when I re start the comp?

Or would it just be better to buy two the same and sell the other one?
