Here in Ecuador SMS is a fairly popular cell phone feature, used at all times, specially because of the low costs implied. Though I personally believe it's really annoying when its use is abused (like in here), BBCNews (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/2504091.stm) is showcasing a new design that could be making it on mainstream products, so why not taking it an early look; too many little buttons at a first glance, usage might be different perhaps?
