Card Problem____

hi i put a i guess u could call it ethernet card in a desktop computer it goes in this thing thats bigger than a pci port and its black...(i dont know what its called)
welll i put it in and plugged the ethernet cable into it and the computer dosent seem to detect it ,,...it has windows Me ..its weird that it cant find the card well any suggestions would be greatful
