Hello all,
PCs are getting cheaper by the day. So my question is, how much did you pay for yours?
Mine was pretty cheap, and it's still as top of the line as you'd expect these days.
I have receipts from all this stuff, so these are definitely accurate:
Athlon XP 2100+ - $83
ASUS A7V8x (KT400) - $115
512MB KingMAX 400MHz DDR - $140
Thermaltake Volcano 9 - $28
Gigabyte Maya (ATi Radeon 8500 Pro) - $100
21" NEC MultiSync P1150 - $150 (refurb.)
SB Audigy MP3+ - $54
120GB Western Digital Special Edition (8MB cache) - $154
10GB Western Digital Caviar - free
AOpen 4x DVD-ROM - free
Lite-On 40x/12x/48x CD-RW - $55
Thermaltake XaserII 5000A - $130
350W Enermax Whisper PSU - $47
Microsoft Natural Keyboard Pro - $39
Optical Logitech Rodent - $20
Joystick - $15
Nostromo n50 - $25
FDD - $9
$1164 total, with peripherals. I've bought all this stuff over time, and it's all added up...:dead: About half that came out of my own pocket. The old HDD and the old DVD drive were really expensive when my dad bought them - I dunno how much he spent though. He gave both to me after he upgraded. This is without speakers.
Speakers were:
500W Kenwood receiver - $150
KLH center speaker - $55
KLH front speakers - $36
Pioneer floorstanders - free
$241 total
System w/ speakers - $1405
Man that's alot.
Supra
02-09-2003, 12:21 AM
Athlon XP 2000+ - $165
Epox 8K3A+ - $90
512MB Mushkin PC2100 - $92
Thermaltake Volcano 7+ - $22
MSI GeForce4 Ti4200 vtd64 - $135
20" OEM Sun(Sony) GDM-20E20 - $168 (refurb.)
SB Audigy 1394 - $45
Labtec Pulse 424 2.1 speakers - $40
2x80GB Seagate ST380021A 7200rpm - $109 each
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM - $51
Lite-On 16x/10x/40x CD-RW - $150
X-PCBOX ver. 1(off ebay) - $27
Netgear FA311 NIC - $15
431W Enermax EG465P-VE PSU - $92
Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite - $19
Logitech Dual Optical - $25
Mitsumi FDD - $Free
Blue round hdd cable set - $15
Total = $1369(wanted it to be under $1000 but got carried away)
All these parts have been bought during the past 8 months till up to last week when I bought the audigy card. Most was bought off ebay and the others were from online retailers. All was paid for by me :dead:
I tried for top of the line, it can do 10,500 3dmarks so I'm happy.
I also have two brand new motherboards and a PSU that are just sitting on my desk because of compatibility issues. The company I bought my case from couldn't have made a profit, it even came with a hot swappable HDD drive bay! My monitor died last night and its off waranty so its at a local repair shop now. Might just go to ebay and buy another one for $130 if the repair is more expensive.

I got mine for free, it's a cheapo deluxe.
I'm not gonna say the actual increases from my upgrading, just give you the percent increase :)
This is what I modded and the cost.
CPU speed increased by 83% plus Volcano 7 heatsink - $70
RAM size increased by 500% Lifetime Warranty - $28
Graphics card: Memory increased by 320% Speed increased by 200% Max Resolution increased by 200% - $25
new fan cfm increased by 8000% (previous owner REMOVED case fan!!) - $10
new optical mouse - $15
new 300W Antec PSU - 55
Remember that I live in Hawaii and I gotta pay a crap load of shipping costs!
:P
It's hard for a lot us to say I would imagine. I know that I have costs covered up by gradual upgrades... So to exactly say how expensive my system was is difficult when you factor in previous components etc..

Heh Rick just add up the cost of everything in your box that you have now...and your speakers, monitor, keyboard etc.

I've not had a PC now which I could consider to be a seperate entity from the trail of parts flowing into and out of it for some time now, so attaching any kind of monetary value would be foolish.
I've literally spent thousands, perhaps tens of thousands of £££ on computer parts over the years.
right now I have 2 machines which would probably be about £2000 each to buy.

It is kind of hard for me as well. Veh and I were discussing it last night in the channel but I had forgotten some things I had added and replaced so my numbers were a little off. I'm not quite sure what I have in it at this point. And if you add in printer and other periferals that opens a whole other can of worms.
How about gifts? Do we add in gift costs? :)

Nice quake...
I shop at pricewatch. You can't blame me. I'm uber-poor and try to squeeze everything I can out of my pennies. Biggest example was buying an 8500LE and flashing it's BIOS :D

Was yours a pre-built system per chance?
You will always pay a premium for those. Plus the price I posted doesn't include my Samsung 957DF 19" monitor, Logitech MX700 and cordless keyboard. That adds about another £300 (~$480) = $2169, but then again we do tend to have higher prices in ripoff Britain...

My system was custom built for me by MicronPC (http://www.micronpc.com) . I had it shipped from the US to UK. That price is without monitor (had one already)

I'm not gonna waste the time to list my specs, they are in my profile, the first one listed, just built it. Actually bought the parts over the last few months, finding good deals where I could, had some parts already, and best estimate I could come up with on the cost was ~$1400, because I couldn't find some of my receipts and had to guess. The second system listed was $1300 over a year ago.
I'm not going through all my other stuff

I think the last big mutation that my system went through was the upgrade to a 1.2Ghz Athlon, 256MB RAM, and an MSI K7T Turbo mobo for around $300. I've added another 256MB since then for around $45 and an ATI Radeon 9100 128MB for $80. Further mutations are planned from now until HL2 release or D3 release! They include:
Audio Upgrade:
5 2-way speakers (DIY) - $70 each - $350 total
1 surround sound receiver - $150ish
subwoofer with amp (DIY) - $140ish
Audigy2 sound card - $78
Audio Total: $718
Video Upgrade:
Undecided - $300ish likely
Main System Upgrade:
P4 2.4Ghz 800Mhz FSB - $187
Intel 865PE-based mobo - $150ish
512MBx2 Corsair XMS 3200C2 DDR RAM - $190
Windows XP Pro (OEM) - $143
Antec True 480W w/blue LED PSU - $100
System Total: $770
That's comes too.... $1800ish
I'm hoping to overclock in the 3.0Ghz range.
FYI: I don't think any of the commercially-available 5.1 computer speakers sound good enough for the money. I'm also having fun building the speakers as a hobby! Most importantly, my wife hasn't added up the total cost for the audio upgrade! :D

What my computer has cost me: Way too much!
(But then again, I allways think it costs way too much)
This list isn't too detailed, as I don't have the receits here (they're in my apartment)...
Asus A7V8X - Gold / Deluxe - 240$
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ - 140$
1gb (2x 512) TwinMos PC 2700 - 195$
Radeon 9700 pro - 462$ (this was cheap in norway, iwth prices around 300$ in the US)
450W PSU - 60$
IBM Deskstar 75GXP 60GB - 165$
IBM Deskstar 60GXP 75 GB - 180$
Maxtor (sorry, can't remember type) 80 GB (8mb cache) - 165$
Logitech Cordless Optical mouse MX700 - 100$
Total: 1707$
Not too bad actually...
But not exactly cheap either...
I'm going to build 2 computers next week for less than this, and that's including lcd screens for both of them.....

I couldn't even guess, it's just a continuous evolution. A part here, a part there...when I get enough spare parts then another computer gets built out of the leftovers. All in all I've spent a lot because the first one cost about $2000 at the time.

I'm building a new PC by next week since my mobo died one month past warranty. Can you believe that.
I intend to spend roughly $300 for AMD cpu, mobo, may be 2 gigs of ram, and a video card. I've been doing a lot of research. It wouldn't be so bad if I had a lot of money but that's my budget and I want to make sure I get the most from it.

Approximately 3500 US. Give or take a few.
My core components are...
A8n32-SLI Deluxe
FX-60
7800 GTX KO 512
Zalman Resenator
Soundblaster Xtreme Music
factor in the creme de la of the market's HD's, Optical Drives, Memory, PSU, mouse(G5 FTW), and case <----These things are surprisingly expensive.
OS and MS-Office were free since I am part of Microsoft's Partner program.
Still saving for that 24inch Dell flatscreen. Using a CRT at the moment.
I looked for deals with free shipping, and looked for rebates.
I aimed for a great comp (basically, all components have favorable reviews and are not the cheapest parts available) that would be ready for 64-bit Windows, but under $1,000. I spent slightly over $1,000. Partly that was because I decided to include a floppy (not necessary anymore these days) that was name-brand/good reviews, and because I selected a dvd that matched my case.
The "budget" keyboard and mouse were next to worthless, so I had to change plans on those parts and pay more than just a few bucks.
I am resisting the urge to upgrade (more ram, faster vid card, do a raid setup), since my goal is to just enjoy a fast, stable comp at a good price.

I forget all the details of the mess of a transaction I had with MacMall. But I got that $1999 15" Powerbook G4 1.67, with the superdrive. So I paid a little less than that (because I actually ordered the 1.5 but they ran out of stock after I ordered), but then a bit more after I upped it to 1.5Gigs of ram, but then a little less after the rebates came in.
This began life as a Compaq bundle from Fry's and became:
<snip>
Hey, what a coincidence...Mine began life as a Compaq too (don't remember from where, got it for my 14th birthday, almost 7 years ago :grinthumb)
Was:
Compaq Presario 5150
K6-2 350
8gb Quantum Bigfoot (Bigslow)
Integrated ATI Rage LT 4 mb
Now: (Prices when I bought the components..I'd be sad if I compared to current prices)
Antec SX1200: $120
Antec Neo HE 500: $140
Gigabyte GA-K8N-SLI: $80
Athlon 64 X2 3800+: $350
2gb OCZ PC3200 2-3-2-5 ram: $240
Geforce 7800 GT: $400
Memorex 16x DVD DL burner: $130
Optorite 48x CD burner: $50
WD Raptor 740GD (74gb SATA): $150
Maxtor 6B300S0 (300gb SATA): $180
Linksys WMP54G: $50
Soundblaster Live: $40
Logitech Cordless Desktop: $130
KDS 19" CRT: $300
Klipsch Promedia v.2-400: $200?
Total: $2560
Although the grand total is far more than that since basically I've just upgraded the computer instead of building a new one time after time.
