Can I run "remote" KDE?

I've got Linux(Mandrake 8.1) running on a machine on my lan.
I was wondering if I could run KDE under X (remote) on one of the Windows
boxes on the same lan ?
I can start X on my win2000 box and connect to the Linux box
and run stuff "remotely" like the clock and calculator... but I want
to run KDE from there - that would be cool.... remote Linux GUI !!

Shouldn't be a problem running KDE.

I just can't remember the kde executable offhand.. startkde?

Yes, I can run startkde but it doesnt start up.... there must be
something missing on the remote box that it needs to run.

Remote box is only an X server, it doesn't have to have anything. You can run X on dumb graphics terminals.

Does KDE run locally? ( a silly question, but I'm not competent to solve your problem )

Well I'm trying to get it to run on the remote linux box, but show
up on the windows machine under X which is running under
W2K.
I'll have to go and do some reading down at the linux documentation
project.... if it can be done it'll be there ;)

I am sure that you can get a version of X-Windows that runs like a Windows app, and then you use a command to run the display on your X windows, but the actual computations are done on the linux box. I've seen it done several times, but forget how.

Thats exactly what I want to do! I heard it can be done.... but I
think you have to run the KDE shell on the windows box under
x-windows.... I think.
I'll go do some reading and see how.

Well, I have a solution for gnome, the executable is gnome-session. Basically, the idea can be realised this way. You can use PuTTY to SSH to your linux box and set X11 forwarding in PuTTY to localhost:0, or whatever you use for your Xserver on a Windows box. As with KDE, startkde is what you want.
But, wouldn't it be easier using XDMCP, after all, that's used for managing headless servers locally or for multiuser workstations.

It's been almost five years, i'm pretty sure that Mudshark is no longer interested!
