What mobo do you have? In setup, be sure you have it set for PnP OS. If it is, go to device manager, right-click and uninstall all USB controllers, then re-start the system. My guess is, you'll hear a lot of doorbells on reboot. :)

My kid sister broke one of her USB connections on her MOBO by pulling on the usb wire to hard. So we had to go an buy her a new USB PCI card. Now she is more careful.

So in answer to your question, yes.
