CD drive problems...

Keep in mind, I don't know much about computer hardware...
I am having problems with my laptop's CD drive. Whenever I insert any kind of disc, after a while, it starts making horrid scratching sounds. Afraid for the CD's life, I push the button to open my CD drive. The drive releases, and is at an odd angle. I pull out the tray (my drive has no motor to push the tray forward) and find that the small, black disc-shaped object that holds the CD in place has popped off. I remove the CD, and place the object back in place...
Why does this happen? Please tell me how to fix this. I don't want to send my laptop to get repaired until I know that this isn't easily fixed.
