cant access email from home through a VPN

Hi all, we have a user here who has a laptop dell latitude d510, running win xp and outlook 2003, he is set up on the VPN to be able to work from home, he can log in to the VPN view and edit our database etc as normal the only thing he cant do is download any new emails or send etc, would any one know of any settings i can checkin microsoft? as it all works when hes pluged in to the network here...
