An OpenPGP solution (http://www.articsoft.com/) from Articsoft is very effective in protecting critical or personal data on your laptop
(or any environment where you wish to control access to the data).

The full function product is the FileAssurity OpenPGP which is fully integrated to
your desktop. Once logged-in with your security pass-phrase, you get access
to encrypt/decrypt right from your right-click menu on the specific file
(see attached).

I have the product (not associated with Articsoft) and encourage you to
consider it for yourself.

the technical spec is here (http://www.articsoft.com/open_pgp_encryption_technical.htm)

Forgot to mention, you might be tempted to use the MS filesystem encryption.
I highly recommend you count to ten and rethink that choice.

WHY? MS Filesystem encryption is tightly integrated with your login password
as part of the pass phrase mechanics. This means if you change your password
(which should be done frequently), you can decrypt any files already protected. :blackeye:

You might be able to create a Recovery Agent (http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/encrypt_to_add_recovery_agent.mspx?mfr=true)

In addition, the feature is found only on XP Pro/2000.
