SharkFiNbowL 05-08-2003, 07:29 PM What is your screen resolution? What inch is your monitor? LCD or CRT? Share with us and get this topic startin'!
I'm not sure if I should use 1280x960 @ 70Hz or 1280x1024 @ 60Hz (Those are the MAX for my 17" monitor). Anyways, if i use 1280x1024, which I'm currently am, then I have to turn the brightness darker or my eyes will get really tired soon.
P.S. will 16bit medium color quality make my eyes less strain if 60Hz?!
SNGX1275 05-08-2003, 07:57 PM I fixed your poll you had 2 resolutions that basically don't exist:
640x468
1024x968
Anyway I think you should run at 1280x960, for 1 its at a higher refresh rate.
But also I don't know how many people have thought about this but running 1280x1024 just doesn't make sense, it doesn't fit in the accepted screen ratio of 1.333333, all the other resolutions (since I fixed them) fit that ratio.
LNCPapa 05-08-2003, 08:18 PM Well.... actually most of my machines run at 1600x1200, but one of my main machines runs at 1920x1440. I also have a couple that run at 1280x1024 and a couple machines at 1024x768. I have a few 21" monitors, a few 19"ers, and 2 17".
LNCPapa
Arris 05-09-2003, 02:40 AM 19" Samsung 957DF CRT @ 1600x1200 76Hz
17" Samsung 172T TFT @ 1280x1024 70Hz
Both 18" viewable area
I guess times have moved on and 1024 is not "the resolution" to run nowadays ;)
StormBringer 05-09-2003, 03:05 AM These are the monitors of my currently active machines
19" 1280x1024@85Hz
19" 1280x1024@85Hz
17" 1024x768@75Hz
15" 800x600@70Hz
1024x768 @ 85Hz, its the max my TFT can do...
DigitAlex 05-09-2003, 06:35 AM 19" flat CRT @ 1152x864 @ 85Hz ( 1024 is too big, 1280 is too small :p )
15" CRT @ 1024x768 @ 85 Hz
MrGaribaldi 05-09-2003, 06:59 AM 1024*768 which is the highest this 17" crt can handle @ 85hz...
I tend to use whatever resolution is the highest, but still able to run at least 85hz as anything less than that doesn't "feel" "solid"...

Yes that's true, 1280x1024 fits 1.25 and not 4/3
I'd like to have your opinions about that, why 1024 and not 960 or vice versa :) please !!
It's because i'm thinking about switching to one of these resolutions but have to pick the best one
thx

Ditto, Im right with yah :grinthumb
timmoore 05-09-2003, 11:19 AM I always run my 17" at 1152*864@85. It suits me perfectly, for some reason I remember posting in a similar thread not too long ago  . I am just imagining things I guess :giddy: . Although not that long ago, I used to have a 14" running at 800*600@60 :) (This was with my old machine).
Didou 05-09-2003, 11:26 AM 1280*1024@85hz on a LG 19" CRT.
My SONY 17" is doing 1024*768@85hz
---agissi--- 05-09-2003, 03:49 PM Im on a 19" running 1152*864 ;)
Edit:
....Alright, whos the one with six computers and voted "1280x1024" on all of them? ?
timmoore 05-09-2003, 06:18 PM In case you didn't notice agissi, you can only vote once.
Edit: I did not mean for that to sound rude, my apologies. I just get a little upset when people state impossible things. It will be my downfall :( .
Phantasm66 05-09-2003, 06:34 PM Well, I went back to using 17" monitors because I started to use the TV for DVDs and games.
How anyone can stand anything other than 1152x864 on a 17" monitor, I do not know.
1024x768 @60hz on a 19" a90f+ flat crt viewsonic.
Tarkus 05-09-2003, 11:12 PM 1600x1200@100Hz normal use on a Sony G520 21"
1280x1024@100Hz while gaming
1024x768@150Hz while gaming

There are a number of video cards I'm familiar with that have either one or the other.. Mine for example only does 1280x1024.. 1280x960 is not an option.
Phantasm66 05-10-2003, 12:00 AM I would expect a lot of gamers here contribute to the 1280x1024 value being the most common; you guys probably all have like 19" monitors as stuff.
I just like 17" now, I use 2 screens, two towers on either side of a TV. I will take a picture one day. I moved from playing games and movies on the TV and just using a smaller monitor for more serious functions some time ago.
All I have to say is if you aren't using 1600x1200, then you need a better monitor. :)
young&wild 05-10-2003, 12:23 AM I m currently using:
1152 x 864 @ 70Hz for my Philips 107T4 17" Flat CRT (newer pc)
1024 x 768 @ 70Hz for my Philips 107T4 17" Flat CRT (old pc)
poertner_1274 05-10-2003, 11:32 AM I have my 21" running at 1600x1200, it isn't too bad, for being a small resolution, becaus the screen is so big.
DigitAlex 05-10-2003, 11:51 AM finally changed to 1280x1024 @ 75 Hz and it's fine
the weird thing is that @ 85Hz it's kinda fuzzy (the text that is only has 1 pixel wide lines isn't really sharp, for example)
acidosmosis 05-10-2003, 12:12 PM 1024x768, although I am probably going to get a bigger monitor pretty soon. At least 19" and run it at a higher resolution. I would like to see how many FPS I can get in games at those higher resolutions. Right now I run all my games in 1024x768, including Battlefield 1942, Unreal II, Quake 3, Army Operations, etc., and they all run at pretty high FPS, so I'm really curious what I can get at higher res.
I just have one monitor right now but when I get the new one I am going to run a dual monitor setup, at least until I start building the new PC in December, which will be a 2.2ghz Athlon XP :-D. weee.
---agissi--- 05-10-2003, 02:15 PM Damn Acid...you have money falling out of the sky or what? I want a new PC every 6 months. Maybe a job would help :grinthumb
Mictlantecuhtli 05-10-2003, 02:41 PM 1600x1200, 78.3 Hz here

hehe yes a job WOULD help lol.
Well, I dont have a LOT of money, but lets see... I make $9/hour @ 35 hours a week, thats roughly $1300/month.
The only expenses I have are student loan, car insurance, gas, food, and a few dental/hospital bills I'm paying for.
Other than that, the rest of the money is for entertainment LOL. At least for now! :D
---agissi--- 05-10-2003, 03:36 PM Sweeet. I dont want to get a job, but I am doing web design. Making websites for 2 companys, $100 profit each way. I dont know if you'd consider that a job or not. At my age I can only work like 2 days a week, 3 hours at a time, so working at Taco Bell, etc, wont do me much good. Anyways, back to topic ;) Lets hear some more resolutions :D

Using BeOS's "Every resolution under the sun" slider I see...
/me wishes he could do that without burning out his TFT
---agissi--- 05-10-2003, 06:54 PM Why do you guys try to use the highest "Hz" on your moniters? 60 gives me a headach so I run 72. But when do you need 80+?

Well! It's like saying why do you need a million dollar when you can live with about ten thousand .. for example. You see, the more the better!!

....Uh, not really!! - :approve: - Normally yes, in this case no. It doesnt affect performance, or offer anything appealing, other then the ease on your eyes/brain if you get headaches, etc.
SNGX1275 05-10-2003, 09:11 PM I can tell the difference in 75 and 85. Just because you can't doesn't mean its not possible.
wicka_wicka 05-10-2003, 10:10 PM Like I always say, you can't tell the difference between anything until you spend your money on it...
I run @ 1024x768 60hz, too lazy to raise it (the 60hz, 1024x768 is fine)...I have anti-glare glasses anyway, so it's nothing really hurts my eyes.
BTW agissi, next time you get lucky and get to make a website, I'm gonna kill ya and take your identity...except I look different than you...damn! Foiled again :D!
DigitAlex 05-11-2003, 12:08 AM well, my 19" is great at 85 Hz @ 1152, the stuff is very sharp as it should be, but it i go 1280 @ 85, the text becomes a litle bit fuzzy as I said (dont even speak about 1600) and it may be because I'm an astygmat, but when I change to 75 Hz @ 1280 it's sharp again, but I notice some very annoying flickering :(
im now at 1280x960 but i use 1024x768 for games
Julio 05-12-2003, 02:35 AM I have a Viewsonic GS790 monitor (19 inches) and I run my desktop at 1024x768 @ 100 Hz, perhaps I could go a little higher, 1152x864, but that'd be about it.
I spend a lot of time using my PC and while a 85 Hz refresh rate is still acceptable, smaller text than my current resolution provides could be troublesome for my eyes.
palmboy5 05-12-2003, 10:12 AM have dual monitor choice, just 'Dual' cause there are alot of possibilities...
i have 1280x1024 and 1536x1024

I understand that totally. I have better than perfect vision, and I had to go out and buy a cheap pair of those old people reading glasses. They are only +125 (which is pretty weak compared to what most people use), but they make such a difference. I have never worn glasses in my life, and now when I use my computer I wear these all the time. It helps to make things just a little bigger, yet still have my screen resolution small.
SharkFiNbowL 05-14-2003, 11:07 PM It's funny that when I had a 15" monitor before, I used 800x600, then I thought 1024x768 wuz way too small for my eyes to see. Then later, I got used to it and loved it. Now, I have 17" and I think 1024x768 is too big, so I moved to 1152x864, then I thought it wuz way too small again, but I got used to it a few days later. Then, I decided to try 1280x960, and I thought it wuz way way way too small, but now... guess what? I'm using it. So, for those people who are thinking of going higher for their resolution but worrying about their eyes not getting used to it... let me tell u.... It's a PIECE OF CAKE! GO FOR IT, YOU'LL GET USED TO IT IN A FEW .. HOURS?! A FEW DAYS FOR SURE!!!
