Yes sorry it's a whole office suite. Try this: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=95E24C87-8732-48D5-8689-AB826E7B8FDF&displaylang=en

Does Word give any kind of message?

Word says "cannot convert password protected documents". When I tried opening it this morning using View with Lotus notes it does say its password protected. I am not getting any prompt to put a password. I do have an idea of what the password may be.

This letter was written to my mother from a friend who is dying, and can no longer communicate. She's frantic to try to open it.

I appreciate all the suggestions you've all provided, and will take any more you can make!

Best-

That password protection is the problem.

You could try this: http://www.viosoftware.com/WordPerfect/WordPerfect+Office+12+OEM.html

Not free, but not so very expensive.
