I have formatted my computer... but beforehand I put everything into one folder on my desktop to keep. but didn't move it to a different drive.

is there any way i can ever recover these files?
i don't care how I do it. as long as I DO IT (I'd like to learn :-P)
and no its nothing dodgy. just stuff I've written, music etc.

during the format I used the windows disc, chose a quick format (ntfs) and thats it..

There are lots of them.Do a search on unformat or recover format.

Most you have to pay for.

Good that you only quick formatted, that has the best chance of getting your data back. You can try this link (http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm) as well as searching the forums (http://www.techspot.com/vb/search.php) for data recovery, I know there are many threads about this, and at least one where several are recommended.

the best for me is file scavenger and O&O recovery
but there are others just don't write to this drive
another words you can't use this drive to install anything on
untill you get back the data

its too late then, i didn't realise what i'd done till after i'd reinstalled windows.
i ran the pc inpsector thing tho and managed to find thousands of deleted files, and so far have only recovered 1minute 40 seconds of sound from one of them....
there is little hope.

I've managed to find a bunch of text documents but whe I open them I'm asked

what are these?
I'm looking for one file in particular a written document, what are the chances of finding it.

I've found 21 files so far, they're all cluster(numbers).(filename)
and are all 1.4mb big no matter what type of file.
what does all this mean?

I have getdata software and I deleted a folder that had 1gb of info on it and I recovered all of it.

Thanx for the tip. I could use all the freeware I can find to supplement Norton Systemworks 2005, Norton Personal Firewall 2005, Spyware and Ad-Aware.

I also have too many neighbors who "KNOW" that format.exe is the only way out!

should be option in pci filerecovery to only look for certain file extensions
O&O recovery will do this
this way you don't wast your time and it should search faster
