A scan of my pc by this AV program produces a report. In this report there are

many entries labeled as "warnings". These warnings are due to the file that was

scanned not being able to be opened by the AV program.

Two questions: Why can't these files be opened by the AV program?
Could these files be malicious?

Sure. Here you go.

C:\hiberfil.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!

C:\pagefile.sys
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Crypto\RSA\MachineKeys\3ad391678a806ec4d691e83aaa393b6f_24adf822-76f7-4481-b30b-ff1b40f8687f
[WARNING] The file could not be opened!

They are all Windows system files.

Why your antivirus is trying to open them is beyond me.

I seriously doubt any of those files are malicious.

However, if you go and read this thread HERE, then post a HJT log, I`ll be happy to take a look and see if there`s anything nasty on your system.

Regards Howard :)

thanks a bunch.

There's actually more files like these but I don't think they are all system files.

Mostly the files are .dat, .log, .edb

Maybe the Avira programme is just crap. I can`t say I`ve ever heard of it to be honest.

A lot of the guys on here use the free AVG antivirus programme. I include myself in that.

Regards Howard :)

I take it you don`t have any such problems with AVG?

I also take it, you`re aware that you shouldn`t be running more than one antivirus product at the same time?

In any event, post a HJT log and I`ll take a look.

Regards Howard :)

No no problems with AVG. I really don't have any problems with Avira either other than the issue we've been discussing.

I had the understanding it was advisable to run two AV programs as long as they don't conflict with each other.

All AV programmes use drivers. The problem with running more than one AV programme is driver conflicts, not to mention it will seriously slow your computer down.

So far performance has not been an issue. I have to install Hijack This then I will run a scan and post my results within the next couple of days.
