Is there any viable means of keeping pop ups at bay? And without causing the website with which they are linked to stop responding? I'm having particular trouble with this website: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/
And its vast array of pop ups.

Download Google's addition to IE or Update to XP, SP2 and IE7. I play the guitar and I have no trouble using this site and others

I'm using Firefox, and I have XP SP2. So it must be something else that's causing it.

Do a Google search for "popup blockers". I'm sure there are programs of this type for Firefox. Both IE7 and Google Toolbar control popups easily...

There are some websites that use aggresive pop-up techniques that overcome pop-up blockers. It is difficult to get around. Try a few different browsers or blockers until you find one that works for you. In general, I find mozilla suite, or firefox to be quite effective for most sites.

I use firefox 2.0 and don't have any other pop-up blocker. It works fine! (No popups/pounders or annoying adverts) There are pop-up blocker options in the Firefox menu. Get the NoScript add-on to be supersafe!

Just went to the website you mentioned and got no pop-ups although I have flashblock installed on Firefox 2.0
