I still use Word 97 SR-1, having found no reason to upgrade. Unfortunately
it was an upgrade from Word 2c (or competitive) and I have lost the Word 2c
disks. Consequently I can't install it again. I read somewhere that you
can create a file using Notepad which will allow an install.

Can you help me with info?

Thats a pretty specific request, I have my doubts you'll get an answer here. But if you are using Word 97 there is a pretty good chance OpenOffice (http://www.openoffice.org/) will work for what you need, and its free. It also can open and save Word 97 documents just fine.
