What is svchost.exe?

I'm running Windows 2000 and every time I shut down it says "C:/winnt/system32/drivers/etc/svchost.exe is not responding, choose End Now.." Before I shut down if I go to the Task Manager under "Processes" it has two entries for svchost.exe running... Is there anything I can do or must I deal with that pop-up message the rest of my life?
Thanks!

Sounds like you have some problem services running in the background. Here's some info on svchost.exe. You may have some misbehaving apps running, so you'll need to track them down by taking a look in 'Administrative Tools > Services', when the problem occurs to see what services are still active. Worth a try, but no guarantees it'll help (I've never tried this). You could also try running 'sfc /scannow' at the run command, just to check your system files are not damaged.
