I have a recurring problem. When in MS Word whenever I apply a new format to an item, such as underlining a word, every item in my document becomes underlined and I have to back-arrow to reverse this. How do I stop every formt change from being applied to my entire document?
Thanks in advance for the assistance.

under the format menu, there's an option to UPDATE the format
(this occurs once for every STYLE in the document).
UNCHECK that option.
Also, a qucik way to backout this kind of goof, use the <ctl>z undo
it will reverse the style change on the first use and undo the underline it
self on the second -- they're nested undos :)

I have Word 2002 and there is no UPDATE under the Format dropdown list. But thanks I did find TOOLS, AUTOFORMAT, AUTOCORRECT, there is a box for PRESERVE FORMAT, and when I unchecked this I resolved the problem.
Appreciate the assistance.

glad it's solved. You may also wish to try openoffice. It's free and I find it to be better than word. It can export into just about any file format.
