the internet explorer icon next to the web addresses is missing in my Address Bar and also in the history folder..not sure how it happened but is there a way to get it back?

Getting the Icon back is simple.
Open Internet Explorer
Click Tools
Internet Options
In Internet Options, click on PROGRAMS tab
Click on RESET WEB SETTINGS
When Window opens click YES
Close out all windows, then click Explorer again. Icon should have returned.

..i've tried so many times in xp to get rid of these iE links.

MkOnce, I think you are referring to something else. If you want to get rid of the links BELOW the Address Bar, then do this.
In Explorer goto
View
Toolbars
and UNCHECK the LINKS-Should be third one down.
Is that what you wanted?

i'm not sure.. translation probs.. i'd like to purge the iE automatisms completly. but it'll reinstall the iE links again and again.. i don't wan't to purge the sw - i'mean in the win-menu.. anyway, i'm not gonna spend much time anymore.. was just wondering
