woohoo - ahem - i assume this is not good - this is what is putting the release date back apraently :@
the question - is this like the Doom 3 alpha - it is avabile on kazaa? and it is just the source code? or a full leak?

anyway - this means we have to wait for HL2 which is NOT a good thing - but it gives nvidia time to get their drivers sorted out

i dont get why people get happy about stuff like this, valve worked hard to make a great game and suddenly the game source gets stolen. Oh well the world is full of morons it cant be helped.

I'm not at all happy about it. I am very pissed about it to be honest. God knows the horror I would inflict on the person responsible if I found them. Your right Valve has worked hard, for 5 years and then some idiot who thinks he is a l33t hax0r like the rest of the retards that think so and ruins everything for everyone including Valve. People like that should be put to death. Pisses me off insanely.

Having the source code of a any program get stolen is a programmers worst nightmare especially for game. The source code for the original half-life game isnt even public yet. There is really no point for any normal person to have the source code and it is nothing like the doom3 leak as the source code is not playable but it can be used by the people that make the cheats for games to make cheats for half-life 2 even before it is released. If this is indeed the real source code for Half-life 2 that got leaked then be prepared to see cheaters in multiplayer the first day it gets released.

Steg

yeh - it has to be a great blow to have 5 years work stolen just like that - honestly - there is NO fun in playing a unfinished game - it probebly will wind up ruining the game in the end when it is finally release

valve have said that they are going to redesign large sections of the multiplayer code to avoid cheating - personally i CANNOT abide cheaters it ruins everyone elses experiance - cheating in SP can sometimes be amusing but in MP it just not funny

Here's another update from ShackNews about the Half-Life 2 leak. Get the whole read here. (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/28641)There's anecdotal evidence that other game developers have been targeted by whoever attacked us. This hasn't been confirmed. We've been providing other game developers with more detailed information about the exploits and evidence of infiltration.

Also another update from Planet Half-Life. (http://www.planethalflife.com/) I put the link in, but it will probably be gone from the front page soon. Now, more bad news: it's possible that more than just the source code leaked, although this is just unsubstantiated rumor at this point. Do not support the distribution of any such files, do not download any of these files yourself (unless you want to expose yourself to horrible viruses and possible legal prosecution), and contact Valve immediately if you come across people or organizations circulating anything suspicious. UPDATE: While there are numerous examples, two files in particular are circulating that claim to be builds of Half-Life 2, both are over a gig: one contains no HL2 content and is really just a front for a key-logging program, and the other contains gay porn. Don't be stupid, and don't download anything HL2 related that isn't official or from a reputable site. It's either illegal, fake, or filled with viruses, so no matter what, you lose.

Well, if this (http://www.gamershell.com/news_BHalf-Life2Bdelayeduntil.shtml), from GamersHell, is true, we've got a long wait for Half-Life 2.PARIS, Oct 7 (Reuters) - The theft of part of its source code has delayed until April 2004 the launch of "Half Life II", the hotly anticipated alien-hunting game of Vivendi Universal Games (Paris:EAUG.PA - News; NYSE:V - News), a company official said.

"A third of the source code was stolen. It's serious because it forces us to delay the launch of the game by at least four months, that is to April 2004. Just the time to rewrite parts of the game," VU Games president of international operations Christophe Ramboz told daily Les Echos in its Tuesday edition.

My theory is:

They didn't finish the game for whatever reason and they needed an excuse to change the date.

Something related to the videocard performance dilemma maybe... who knows

Except that the source code really was stolen. They have a contract to suppy the game with ATI cards, so why would they want to upset ATI?

It's just a supposition... The truth is that HL2 will be disappointingly slow in nvidia cards that are not 5600/5700 or 5900/5950. Maybe what they want is to tweak it more or wait for nvidia to react. With this big corporations you never know what is going on behind the scenese. I just hope this doesn't start to look like duke nukem fornever

This has been in the news for a while now, so it’s garnering a lot of publicity. We would have to be very skeptical of the human nature to pretend that they were well aware of the media repercussions a theft like this could have ;). I don’t think it’s part of a scheme; c’mon, in order for this to make sense means that the industry would have to be in the hands of unscrupulous, money-hungry, twisted executives who could sell their own mothers if necessary.

I posted this in another thread, but I don't think anybody is looking at that one.

This, from The Inquirer (http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=11960), kind of echos some thoughts that have been expressed here first.

Quote:
If Valve's security really is so weak that it somehow lost the code to a hacker through a purported problem with Microsoft Internet Exploder or Outlook, we need fear no aliens or gremlins invading the world from Alpha Centauri or Sirius or Rigel or wherever. If games designers don't know how to protect their own work, who does?

Quote:
Like we said, excuse us for being uncharacteristically cynical, but doesn't the whole thing have the sniff of a fantastic David Blaine-like stunt?

Nic

The delay is not good for Valve either, as Doom 3 looms on the horizon. HL2 has already been tweaked for Nvidia cards and the only tweaking left is for Nvidia to write faster drivers. ATI payed a lot of money for HL2 so they are likely not very happy, as their promotion in the run up to Christmas is now left somewhat flat.

I'm getting more and more convinced this is all just a game Valve is playing with us. Look at this from The Inquirer. SOURCES CLOSE to Valve Software tell us that despite wires – including us – picking up a Les Echos report that Half Life is delayed, it won't be.

Apparently Valve is close to issuing a statement about all of this – and our sources maintain that it's still going to ship in the "holiday" period – Yuletide to you and me.

What a fascinating tale this is all becoming. µ

The HL2 Dilemma, continued
Next is the NFO taken from a supposed patch that fixes the supposed HL2 beta to make it work to some point. I've seen lots of pictuers of HL2, and a 15 minute video I found in the web. If someone here wants those links, ask for them an i'll give you throuh a PM. Don't ask for where to get this patch and the 1.5 Gb beta release, as I'm not giving it to you, neither i downloaded it.

This text was written by the supposed release group called "Anon", which as hi mentions, is not a group, it just stands for "Anonymous".

This guy does pretty serious statements in this file. The most revealing thing is that he says that the beta he leaked, was the most current work valve had, the stuff that was supposed to be released 30 september. I don't know you, but I just don't know what to think already.... judge yourself.

Well, I forgot to update you with the freshest stuff from
Valvesoftware.

Detonator-52.13-ANON got leaked today, its the new NVidia
drivers for HL2, though i have no fancy video card to test the
driver on.

Btw., for those of you still thinking -ANON is a group, i have
to say it isnt. Its just Anonymous.

To all those saying HL2 was delayed because of the hacking
action, ill just remind you that what was leaked is what Valve
has, nothing more and nothing less, so its pretty good to
understand it wasnt finished yet.

Also I'd like to point out the E3 was one big fake by Valve.
Ever tried to kill that soldier in physicstown ? Notice the
door will still get kicked ? No s*****ed sequences ?

To everyone saying this is no Beta: I'd like to point out that
THIS is what you wanted Valve to release on 9/30/03, theres no
such thing as a much better release in Valves network!

To Valve: I suggest you stop lying to your customers about how
much was stolen/compromised, or I'll have to release everything
just to prove my point. And you know what you got, as I do.

Oh, by the way. This stuff was found on the net "As Is"... maybe some kiddie wrote it... who nows... so don't blame me if it ain't real.

Another note,

The detonator 52.13 drivers mentioned there are already all over the place. that drivers are supposedly the newest ones and should improve hl2 *a lot*. I saw them in Guru3D.com

http://download.guru3d.com/pafiledb...ion=file&id=681

As with anything beta, use it at your own risk.

I've got a summary and editorial of the situation up over at TweakTown Gamer (http://www.ttgamer.com).

Pretty serious stuff, but in the end I don't think it will hurt Half-Life 2 sales.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Garland, TX - October 9th, 2003

DUKE NUKEM TO USE PIRATED HALF LIFE 2 SOURCE

The eagerly anticipated Duke Nukem Forever maybe be coming out sooner than you think. "Now with the release of the HalfLife2 source code I think we can finally finish this game," says George Broussard, project leader for Duke Nukem Forever. "After running into performance issues with the Unreal engine my team has spent the last year and a half porting it back to the Quake2 engine. Now with the availability of the HalfLife2 source we can use this conversion program I found to port the entire game to the HalfLife2 engine almost overnight."

When asked about the legallity of using illegal source code, Mark Rein, Vice President of Epic MegaGames had this to say: "The whole issue of legal and illegal has really blurred in the last few years. With programs like Napster, KaZaa, and the like many people can now download applications, movies, and music without paying a cent. We're very excited that 3DRealms has adopted this forward thinking approach by appropriating the HalfLife2 source code."

Duke Nukem Forever, the sequel to Duke Nukem 3D, has been in development for 4 years and is expected to be finished in time for a holiday release. "We're thinking possibly Yam Kippur of 2005 but you never know," says Broussard.

I have to give credit where credit is due...;)

Nic

Utter nonscence. They would be sued. Also, you can't just *port* a game to a new engine that quickly - just take a look at how long Halo PC took to get here from its XBox convertion (2 years). Further, Duke Nukem Forever has been scrapped, and may not get taken up again, so don't hold your breath. There are NO performance issues with Unreal engine, and it runs extremely fast. Just take a look at all those framerates in the benchmark tests for graphics cards. Nuff said :=).

Nic, in answer to the HL2 comes with XT, they're providing...

..."Coupon in the box" now aren't they :/

Nic
10-11-2003, 03:54 PM
Indeed, and there are multiple versions of HL2 being produced, so what version is the coupon for? A trimmed down single-player only version perhaps? That's still 40 hours of gaming excellence none the less :=). The target is still Chistmas for a release date, but it could slip to Q1/2004. I'm playing Halo right now so I'm not too bothered about the delay.

Its real. there is a playable beta. Or alpha. The fact is that there is both the source code and the compiled runnable files of half life 2. It's not finished, but there is code that another companies could take a look at.... an maybe take advantage.

But BS is there in this industry... porting a game overnight is a big big joke.

I would post a url where there are images and proof of a downloadable beta, source and patch... which work. I didn't do it because it's in a bit torrent forum, so unless the moderators here let me post the link, i wont put it.

Probably most of you have already seen 'live' images from users who downloaded the beta already.

Gavin

Despite the alpha being "playable" (if you could even call it that), I don't think it's really going to be a problem with relation to Half-Life 2 sales.

What will be is the security issues that have now been raised about the Source engine.

I would advise against posting any links to anything containing betas or source.
The moderators here try to run a clean forum, and this stuff is "allegedly" stolen, if in fact it does exist, and stolen materials will get the same response by TS moderators as pirated materials.
