I have applied to and been accepted into the Malware Removal Academy.
The MRA is an online academy through which i expect to learn plenty in order to improve my skills with HJT and other malware removal software.
I hope one day to be nearly as good as Howard and to help out much more in the Security and the Web forum in the future.

Good to hear, we need a backup in there. I applaud you guys that take the time to deal with those kind of problems, I don't have the patience or the desire to learn :/

I know how to read HJT logs ( most of the time, unless it's some weird stuff with abunch of numbers or something :haha: ) but I don't think I would help people in the Security & The Webs part of the forum because I might mess someone's computer up
Also congrats Rik, I might apply to that forums too so I can learn more about security and stuff :)
Cheers TimeParadox, you should join up as i have done.:)
Its a hell of a lot of reading and work tho, but if like me you are prepared to put the time in and learn then its the right thing to do.
PM me and i will send you the address if you want.
I will pm the address to you.
I will get better with HJT logs, too.

i've been learning how to read hjt logs as well, not through the academy that you mentioned but there's a bunch of sites out there that teach you the basics :)
plus it all comes with practice ;) as long as you know what you're doing :D

For anyone interested in joining the Malware Removal University (http://uk.wrs.yahoo.com/_ylt=A0oGkueXL_ZGzwcAbrVLBQx.;_ylu=X3oDMTFicWNmcmEwBHNlYwNzcgRwb3MDMgRjb2xv A3NrMQR2dGlkA1VLMDI2NV8yNjUEbANXUzE-/SIG=1295e876f/EXP=1190625559/**http%3A//forum.malwareremoval.com/viewtopic.php%3Ft=233) Click the link.
Apart from finishing off the HJT threads I`m currently involved with, I won`t be doing any more HJT logs etc.
I`ve been doing HJT logs for a long time and quite frankly, I`ve grown tired of it. It`s damned hard work and very very time consuming. It`s now time for someone else to step into the breach. ;)
Please note: I will still be available in an advisory capacity should anyone require it.
Regards Howard :)

Please note: If any of you spot any copy and pasted log files, if you send me a pm with a link to the particular thread, I`ll be happy to remove them.

The Malware Removal University doesn't allow 'people in training' to post solutions. They seem to think it takes a while to become proficient.
I hope you are monitoring the Security forum, Howard.

Yes. They say it takes from around 2 months to give supervised advice. But 2-6 months to give unsupervised help.
I think this is why Howard has come out of HJT retirement. We need be fully trained before we can give Howard a rest.

I made the post before realizing that Howard was back (from his retirement).
Thank god.

Yes, that`s pretty much it.
The bottom line is, anyone who offers advice in the S&W forum needs to know how to analyse the results of the various log files. Otherwise, it just defeats the object.
Also, giving the wrong advice can have far reaching consequences for the member who has the malware problem.
In other words, if you`re not 100% sure, don`t reply.
Regards Howard :)

Also, giving the wrong advice can have far reaching consequences for the member who has the malware problem.
I haven't compiled the stats, but it seems to me that the most frequent problems are Security related. So if there is a mess up in that area, this site could suffer.
I guy /gal wouldn't be all that upset if his/her "DVD Writer" problem wasn't solved. But if they have a PC crippled by innocent but unqualified advice, the results could be disasterous.

I totally agree with you there.
Regards Jase :)
In my case. I spent many a day looking through HJT logs here on TS then compared what I spotted to what Howard wrote. I then began to ask questions of Howard, who was then far far more helpful than I could ever have imagined. Thanks to Howard I had a very good base from which I was able to expand upon by going to the MRU at his suggestion.
Not only have I learned a great deal from Howard but I have also gained a great friend.:)
So, although I am only a freshman at the MRU I don't quite feel like one because of how much I already know.
My skills are not right up to scratch yet but I absolutely know how not to damage someones system. I also let those people with bad infections know that I am still learning and give them the choice of my help or not so that they can decide for themselves.
Malware removal is without doubt a huge responsibility.
Due to personal circumstances I have been far less proactive than I wanted to be. But things are improving bit by bit. I have been sticking to giving out the basic advice and helping out with the more minor infections that I feel comfortable with.

Thing is, once we polish one technique, the bad guys come out with something more for us to combat. http://bestsmileys.com/angry1/2.gif

One of the main reasons for malware, is money.
Stealing peoples sensitive details/bank details/identity fraud etc.
Regards Howard :)
Also, dont forget the "Your system is infected" popups. They are just for moneyspinning too.
