burner does not recognize CD-R discs

My burner writes that their is no disc when I try to burn using a CD-R. And when I put a DVD-R in the burner it recognizes it but tells that it is the wrong type of disc for making an audio CD.

your burner may only use +R discs.

some use one or the other. Some can do both.
