I have noticed that even while I am not downloading anything from limewire, my norton antivirus firewall pops up asking me if I want to block or permit limewire to connect! then, I get worm intrusion attempt messages from norton! is this the fault of limewire?

You are using a P2P program. That leaves you open to almost anything! However., you need to look into why Limewire is attempting to access the internet from your machine! As far as the Worm 'intrusion' method, that is attempt to access "your" machine.
So the indications are that something on your machine is attempting to assess the internet and something from the internet is trying a access your machine!
Sounds like you have some significant security problems with Limewire. Get rid of it!

Sounds like you have some malware on your system.
I suggest you download and install ad aware, and run a scan with it.
Also doing a scan with Norton anti virus as you already have it would be a good idea. (Make sure it is up to date first).
If for any reason Norton does not do the trick, run an online scan at
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ use Internet Explorer and allow 45 minutes.

Your first problem is..you have norton. First get rid of that.
Your second problem is that you obviously do not know what a p2p program is meant for, so get rid of that too. Find an alternative firewall, and then you should be fine.

I agree. AVG Free is a better alternative. And it's free.

P2P programs like Limewire pose more risks than usual and should not be used by clueless individuals.
Find an alternative firewall, and then you should be fine.
Ashampoo Firewall Free is a good choice for anyone who wants a simple firewall. Easy mode is a piece of cake.
If you do want to download it, register with a temporary email service to prevent spam. I personally like http://www.guerrillamail.com/ but there are plenty out there. Just search for temporary email service or temporary email to see more.

Although you're not not downloading anything, Limewire still attempts to connect to the Internet and allows other Limewire users to check your shared folder and upload files. You need to explicitedly turn off that feature in Limewire.
You may also (and VERY LIKELY) have spyware on your PC. I run an in-home computer servicing business and 80% of my call are spyware. Anyone who uses Limewire or some other peer-to-peer filesharing program, always has big spyware on their PC. The spyware is likely what is tripping off your Norton.
