Need good data backup ideas and tips...

I have really important stuff that I want to backup, and I want the best ways for backing them up.

to HD's and DVD Discs.

Hardisk backup:

I have total of 3 HD's (500GB, 80GB, 20GB)

I want to back all of the files from those HD's to a new 1TB HD that I will buy.

so I want to know, what is the best way to backup these files to the new HD?
I tried before to manually move the files from and HD to another, but I always get errors like (cannot move protected file) something like that.

DVD Discs backup:
I also want to back them up to DVD discs for double backup.

so I want to know if there's a program that can do all the work, like writes 4.7 GB data on each DVD disc from my files on the HD.

without selecting each file manually.

Thanks allot!

You do realise that ~500GB of data needs 100 DVDs to back up and the writing would take some 10 hours?! And no, there is no program that can put a blank DVD in the drive after every 5 minutes.

even if it needs 500 DVDs, I still want to do it.

and I never said that I need a program to put a DVD disc for me.

I said a program to write all of the files to DVDs without calculating the files to know will it fit in the disc by my self.

example:

I want to copy a 50GB folder to DVDs, the program automatically takes 4.7 GB data from the 50GB folder and once it finishes it says insert disc 2 please to copy the next 4.7 GB files.

Like that.

yes xp will make bak up like this
but if 1 of the disc's fail than the bak up replace function could fail
system does not write linearly to discs
you should look into acronis true image
it will even setup a backup times
if you wanted a 10 dvd drive setup and they all had blanks it would write to them
this is a little harder to do than if you used tape backup systems
most big companys are unloading there tape backups and going hard drive archival
so you can get these a low cost
and this way you can over write the tape if you don't want to save the older data
WORM drives are expensive but hold more than standard 4.7gb
Write Once Read Many
and again can buy these at a very low cost
some day when I have a couple grand to blow I'm getting a 700 disc jukebox to store all my junk

I use US media CD/dvd media , Memorex,
life of burned disc is about 2 years to 4 years
I keep away from lights and heat
if longer term is needed go with archival gold
memorex I use because they will replace without question any bad disc's

what you want to do is a lot of work if not using automated equipment

archival gold sounds good. but are u sure these are trusted?

u never heard anyone had problems with it?

with the few gold disc's I've made only scratching them has caused issues
I have one cd disc thats pretty old
they are expensive to use
I know this has been said before
I would buy another drive or drives and load to them
if you want to feel safe buy scsi drives and the SCSI Host Bus Adapter for them
I have 7 year old drives still chugging away
they are again very expensive

a quick look at cd and dvd make up
the plastic the media dye metal inside the plastic
air will get in at some point and corrode the metals
the plastic will be affected by UV rays and other contaminants
gold does not corrode

and knitting and knitting
