The D610 is one of the difficult ones. There are huge numbers of posts in this forum which you should be able to find in a search. They relate to password issues with the -595B (refurbished) issues for the Latitude D610 and D620.
Thanks, however I am curious why you put (refurbished) by the -595 - I do not have a refurbished computer, I purchased a Dell 2nd HDD Adapter Drive Module and installed a 2.5 inch HD. This is when I get the grey screen asking for a password, the D610 laptop does not have any other passwords in the bios. I have looked through many postings and do not see any info that applies to my problem. The HD I installed in the module is brand new, and can be read through a USB port but as soon as I install it into the Dell Module, it asks for a password????

Nearly always, the -595B on the end of a service tag is an indicator that it is a refurbished computer... or a previously leased computer that has been returned to Dell for reconditioning at then end of a lease or rental contract... This also indicates that the recovery disc set will not work on it. It can also be a computer sold on the Home Shopping Network, or special low priced Dell computers.
Did you buy a refurbished hard drive or a special price hard drive.
Discuss it with US Dell tech support.. they may have a broader definition

Horse manure! Older models with the D35B systems when BIOS updated by dell or a refurber would become -595B systems, but brand new machines starting with the C610/Inspiron 4100 machines came with the -595b systems. You really should check out your facts before posting nonsense.

Thank you Kimsland for the advice, I tried the passwords - but no luck. And no, this clam doesn't have a floppy.
I took the BIG leap - followed Paragon33's advice and pulled the case apart (in fact during my research phase I even found a link to the service manual :approve: thanks again to Paragon33 ) pulled the processor and wired a switch across 3 & 6 of the 24C02. Took about 3 tries to get the timing right to pull the trigger but on the 3rd try it went into manufacturing mode !!! At that point the keyboard would only respond with beeps, so I shut it down. On the next power up I was able to go into setup, paswords DISABLED !!! The curious thing I found was that during my "lockout" period there were 4 passwords Admin, Setup, Config and HD. Once the 24C02 process was complete the config option was gone - don't really care since I won't be needing it - just an observation.
Anyway my plan was to run the UBCD4win from the only other device I could configure to boot from. Set CD as boot device - popped in the magic disk and pfffffffffffffft - no joy. Seems my disk won't run on this former door stop. I'll work on that later - needs to boot in vga mode to be compible or I need to build one with the Dell driver. Good new is from the boot menu on disk is offline registry and password editor - remade W2K administrator account with no password - save - reboot without CD and BINGO !!! Log in as admin and life is good. Now all I have to do is put the 18 gazzilion screws back in the holes and clean it up !!!
Thank you again Paragon33 - you da man !!!
Oh, and before I forget one little tech tip - that 30 guage wire wrap stuff is a biatch to work with - once you have threaded it from the pads on the chip use a small piece of painters tape to temporarily act as a strain relief whilst you reisert the CPU and keyboard. I had to redo the wire once as I must have nicked it when I stripped it- and it doesn't take many bends to break to start with !!

Does anyone have a trouble shooting guide for the D400 laptop? I've done something wrong/reassembled something backward as the machine doesn't boot up (It was before starting).(I've got a copy of the Dell service manual without any trouble shooting guide)
When the power button is pressed all the lights on the control panel light up followed by the central "A" blinking for 5 seconds before the power is automatically switched off by the laptop.
Any ideas gratefully received

If you have dismantled and re-assembled it you may have a cpu heatsink that isn't properly attached causing cpu shutdown.

03-18-2008, 11:58 AM
Look for a loose wire or cable inadvertently disconnected elsewhere in the box... follow each wire down to its connections. Look for bent plug pins and other anomalys.
If you removed and reinistalled the cpu, take it back out to check for a bent pin... then if bent, be extremely cautious about straightening it. They break off easily.
As CCT suggests, the CPU and heatsink can seem correctly installed, when they are not properly seated. The system won't boot if it detects even a slight problem.
CPU and cooling fans are sometimes easily plugged in backwards.
Test your power supply by trying it in another unit, or borrow one from another computer to test. Or better, use a power supply tester... they run $9 to $20 at computer stores and online.

the password is mentioned in the forums as many times as the link to the shorting instruction BUT if you want to do that on a d830 - forget it. this method will not work on newer latitude models.
maybe you can tell a little more about why and what you need first?
btw a d830 is pretty new so why don't you call dell and let them help you. help is part of the warranty which this laptop should still have unless it was stolen.

Hi everyone, a friend of mine asked me for repairing his laptop (Dell Latitude D620), his uncle bought it at a flea market in texas but when he turned it on(here at mexico, the battery was discharged) he realized it has a bios pass, i tried to locate the 24c02 but i read all the post in some threads, and there's no solution at least with the shorting method. the number is #5PLSKB1-595B. I don't know if it's stolen or not, the only thing i know is it has bios pass, could anyone of here help me to unlock it?

Dell latitude c400, just shorted the BIOS password, got it working. Booted it a few times on XP, worked fine. I was powering it off the mains then.
I then tested the battery life, so I turned it on without the power cord, but half way through draining I had to go to my other house, so I flipped the lid down and carried it to my car (I believe shutting the lid when only powered by battery puts it to sleep, or on standby?).
It would not power off the battery alone when in the car, and still does not, even though I left it with 50% charge. It does also not power up when plugged into the mains anymore.
Very puzzled, any help would be appreciated
- Jake
NB: The battery charge light flashes green approximately once every 10 seconds.

Generally, not possible to happen without keyboard action or fingerprint action.
Darn near impossible to fix on a Thinkpad without replacing the Motherboard.
Met a lot of people who claim they can do it. Nobody has actually produced, that I have heard about.
Good luck. Let us know if you get a reliable source.
Try calling IBM
If you are a registered owner, call 1-(800) 426-7378 and have handy your serial number, type number and relevant part numbers or look for IBMSERV.

here's the datasheet showing 24c256 chip with 8 pins and 14 pins. the notch at the top of the chip indicate pin 1 on the left. pin 8 is across from it. pin 4 is gound, pin 5 is sda, and pin 6 is scl. it looks like this:
1-o-----o-8
2-o-----o-7
3-o-----o-6 <-------- SCL
4-o-----o-5 <--------SDA PIN 4 IS GROUND
on the 14 pin chip, ground is pin 6, sda is pin 8 and scl is pin 10. GROUND can be anywhere on the chassis. all you need to worry about is pin 8 & 10 or 5 & 6.
good luck.
