Applications Cutting Out

Hi

A friend has given their laptop to try and fix.

When you launch IE or Firefox (I just installed FF) it loads and appears on screen and then just disappears without you having done anything.

I've just downloaded AVG root-kit and that cuts out almost immediately after I double click the .exe file to install it.

Any ideas on what's happening?

There's no place to go without any system information. Have you got any?

It appears that a system restore has solved the problem.
