Dom Player needed to play video file?

I have a video file my friend gave me that he couldn't open, so he passed it on to me to see if I could open it.

When I open it, I get a message on the screen that I need to download the Dom Player from a website to view the video.

I was under the impression that the Dom Player is actually a type of http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/violent019.gif malware.
Is this true?

If it is true, can the file be converted or fixed to play in a normal media player, such as DivX or Winamp for example so the file can be viewed without the need for a Dom Player?

Thanks,
Daveo

This does not answer your questions fully.
But does it play on VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html)

What is the extension of the madia file exactly?

Apologies for double posting.

But after some searching, I've found that this media file will Not play on VLC media player, and is likely a trojan or virus (Not VLC, the dom file)

It is advised to remove it (delete) immediately

The file extension is supposed to be ".avi"
