When I insert an SD card into the reader, the computer will recognize it but I can not open it or move things onto it. If I go into My Computer it shows the card as being there, but when I double click on it nothing happens. Any advice?

Try it in another device to see if it can read or store there... Flash memory cards have a very bad failure rate.
You might also try reformatting the card.
